Artistic Director
Nicole C. Laliberté, artistic director of Freedom Dances, has performed with Sidelong Dance Company, Boston Dance Company, EBA Dance Theatre / Maude Baum and Company, MJT Dance Company, and Honolulu Dance Theatre, among others. Nicole holds her MFA in Choreography from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a BFA in Dance from The Boston Conservatory. Of note, she has taught at UNCG, James Madison University, Meredith College, Darton College, and Greensboro Ballet. Very recently, she has been branching out as a dance writer as well.As an independent artist, student, teacher, and guest artist, Ms. Laliberté has staged choreography at The Boston Conservatory, The Boston Dance Complex, Green Street Studios, James Madison University, Darton College, Rhode Island College, American College Dance Festivals in Vermont and North Carolina, countless studios nationwide, and in the repertories of Maude Baum and Company, Albany, NY, and Sidelong Dance Company, Winston-Salem, NC.Freedom Dances was officially created in 2004 while Ms. Laliberté was residing in North Carolina, as a pick-up company to showcase her work at a variety of venues. Since then, Freedom Dances has appeared at Old Dominion University’s Regional Choreographers’ Showcase, the Greensboro Fringe Festival, the North Carolina Dance Alliance Annual Event, North Carolina Dance Project’s Saturday Series, Cary Academy, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the North Carolina Dance Festival, Charlotte Dance Festival, and American Dance Festival’s Acts to Follow Series.The 2015 re-birth of the company, based in Rhode Island, has included invitations to Third Life Studio’s Choreographers Series in February, Luminarium Dance Company’s 24 Hour ChoreoFest hosted by the Dance Complex in September, and AS220’s Dance Works in Process in October. Freedom Dances and Heather Brown Dance have joined forces to present Past Forward in Reverse, a January 2016 choreography concert made possible through a production residency at AS220.Freedom Dances is committed to the creation and performance of works that explore individual, social, and cultural identities. Works seek to reveal that among diversity and across boundaries, there exists a human solidarity.For two decades Nicole traveled extensively making dances, performing, learning and teaching dance in Boston, New York, Hawaii, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and St. Petersburg, Russia. Having returned to her native Rhode Island, she is pleased to be on the faculties of The Dance Academy in Fall River, Dance Extensions in Bristol, and South County Movement Center in Hopkinton, where she is thrilled to be working with amazingly talented and promising young dancers.
