ACROVINYASA takes yoga from Earth to Air! Part Vinyasa Flow, part Acroyoga, part Inversion Training... In this workshop we will Flow, Float and Fly! This practice combines traditional yoga postures with L-based acrobatic flying. The aerial portion revolves around one partner (the base) supporting the other (the flyer) in moving through the air in a series of yoga postures. The necessary component for students learning the practice for the first time is the role of the spotter, who makes sure both base and flyer remain safe and properly aligned. Acrovinyasa brings a playful approach to our traditional yoga practice, feeling more like a dance with gravity than an intense physical practice!

In order to be a working dancer we are often expected to have both a strong handle on our personal preferences and the capability to adapt or take on the movement style of whomever is creating the work. Each individual dance artist must find their balance between the variety of techniques and styles and the movements and forms that best suits their body as means of building confidence and a strong sense of self in regards to their abilities. Forging an internalized collaboration by using all the training they have received in an environment that asked them to challenge their habit and contemplate the action that they enjoy physically.
The class begins with a structured warm-up based on Bartenieff Fundamentals and yoga as a means of awakening the individual’s creative energy and mind-body connection. Then a structured improved using the Gaga principle of joy of movement to think less about technique and more about master of potential and grow within their own capacity. Guided by the four elements (Body, Energy, Space and Time) of dance participants use their awareness to observe habits and limitation and use the notion of exploration and counterpoint to find new and exciting ways of moving.
Great for all levels, as all you need is awareness to see your habits and the desire to grow past them to participate in the class.

In this beginning level class, we will explore basic Nuad Boran (Thai Massage) principles as related to Contact Improvisation. Using acupressure and passive stretch, we will give and receive energetic bodywork. We will use our body weight, in relationship to gravity, to provide compression and gentle stretching while maintaining safe alignment of our bodies to support our practice. No previous bodywork experience is necessary. Thai Massage is done on a mat, fully clothed. It is often referred to as assisted yoga and the dance of metta (healing touch). It is relevant and beneficial for many dance practices as it deepens our understanding of alignment, movement and touch. Benefits of Thai Massage include increased range of motion, stress reduction, improved circulation, deep relaxation, and illness prevention.

A form of dance in which it is easy to depict the connection between our past and our present. House is a dance form and music genre that has to this day held great respect for anything Afro Diasporic in nature, from its beat, rhythms and grooves. House dance is the closest to the movement I envision to be more of a correlation to the African culture. The major source in house dance movement steams directly from the music and the elements within the music such as jazz, African, Latin, soul, R&B, funk, hip hop, etc. The other source is the people, the individuals and their characteristics, ethnicities, origin, etc. You make it you.

In house dancing, there is an emphasis on the subtle rhythms and riffs of the music, and the footwork follows them closely. It is often improvised and emphasizes fast and complex foot-oriented steps combined with fluid movements in the torso.

House is a feeling and a culture.

Embrace the power of artistic connections in social change movements throughout history. Students will learn dance repertory that incorporates themes of social justice, and later create their own! Repertory by Nikki Manx Dance Project includes "Mandela," the historical legacy of the South African prisoner gone president, "No One Should Go Hungry," an interactive dance set to an audio-documentary created with homeless citizens, and "Same Love," which supports marriage equality. Students will explore how to incorporate various social issues in expressive art forms such as dance, spoken word and multimedia.
