Luigi is sometimes referred to as "father jazz" since he is credited with creating the first formal jazz technique. Luigi's pioneering method is based on anatomically sound principles, using center and floor work exclusively. He believes that students should learn how to support and control themselves totally from within and find the feeling of using space as a barre. This concept places the body in optimum position for transitions and movement across the floor. And one must always keep moving.

Yoga+Dance Lab is a technique class which combines vinyasa (flowing) yoga asana (postures) with contemporary dance. This class is suitable for intermediate-advanced level movement practitioners. We start with a 30 minute dynamic vinyasa warm up which moves like a stream of conscious flow with no beginning and no end. Specific postures will be called out one after another by the instructor which are practiced on the mat as a group. Once the sweat is nicely flowing and the blood is adequately pumping, we break quickly to grab some water, remove the mats, and start to take the asanas into traveling sequences through the space. Turns, jumps, balances, and floor work weave together one posture after another with seamless transition, culminating in a sweeping, luscious flow that deeply connects body and mind through breath: a true moving meditation.

This floorwork-based modern class will combine the grace of modern with the speed and fluidity and streetdance, capoeira, and house dance. Phrases will involve every part of the body—whether in the air or on the ground. The class focuses on how to move from high to low to high again, and on how to rediscover “the down” through floorwork. By shifting the focus from an internal dialogue to creating movement that, in its own physicality, can tell a story by itself, the class will delve deeper into the cathartic potential of sweat and exhaustion, while offering a new and active method of expression.

This workshop will address ways in which to explore choreography of a sociocultural/sociopolitical nature through research, movement exercises, theater games, and personal reflection. It will focus on tools related to the art of creating and crafting socially conscious choreography in an engaging and approachable fashion. The facilitator will lead participants through some best practices for engaging in this subject matter, share processes in honing tactics through trial and error, discuss specific experiences and outcomes of exploring socially conscious choreography as both choreographer and performer, as well as expand the dialogue to the participants giving them the space to brainstorm for ways in which to include sociocultural/sociopolitical topics in their practice of dance making. Participants will be encouraged to continually discuss and reflect on their experience throughout the process, and by the end of their experience they will leave with the shared tools of the facilitator, their own tools, as well as their own short collaborative work. This session will look to inspire other choreographers to discuss local, national and international issues both past and present through the medium of dance. By creating a safe space to explore our social and political beliefs we are able to make profound connections between our understanding of ourselves, our immediate surroundings and our global community. The creative process becomes both interdisciplinary and introspective. By creating a nexus with our audiences we engage an educated and socially active body politic, and elucidate the tremendous importance of utilizing dance as a conduit of change.

In this workshop we will use dance explorations to reflect on our individual relationships to place, history and community. Whether we look at how we were raised, or communities and practices we only briefly touch, our bodies are always situated in culture. Through investigating how culture lives in our bodies we can develop greater self awareness and increase our capacity to engage with the unfamiliar. We will begin with a guided warm-up, listening to our bodies and situating ourselves in the space. From this basis of physical self-awareness, we will generate individual material recalling and cultivating experiences of cultural identity, familiarity, and difference in our lives. We will then work with partners, witness each other’s movement, and amplify any points of connection. We will use drawing, short written reflections, and verbal sharing in combination with our movement work.

The aerial portion revolves around one partner (the base) supporting the other (the flyer) in moving through the air in a series of yoga postures. The necessary component for students learning the practice for the first time is the role of the spotter, who makes sure both base and flyer remain safe and properly aligned. In order to be a working dancer we are often expected to have both a strong handle on our personal preferences and the capability to adapt or take on the movement style of whomever is creating the work. Each individual dance artist must find their balance between the variety of techniques and styles and the movements and forms that best suits their body as means of building confidence and a strong sense of self in regards to their abilities. Forging an internalized collaboration by using all the training they have received in an environment that asked them to challenge their habit and contemplate the action that they enjoy physically.
The class begins with a structured warm-up based on Bartenieff Fundamentals and yoga as a means of awakening the individual’s creative energy and mind-body connection. Then a structured improved using the Gaga principle of joy of movement to think less about technique and more about master of potential and grow within their own capacity. Guided by the four elements (Body, Energy, Space and Time) of dance participants use their awareness to observe habits and limitation and use the notion of exploration and counterpoint to find new and exciting ways of moving.
Great for all levels, as all you need is awareness to see your habits and the desire to grow past them to participate in the class.

By shifting the focus from an internal dialogue to creating movement that, in its own physicality, can tell a story by itself, the class will delve deeper into the cathartic potential of sweat and exhaustion, while offering a new and active method of expression.

Ballet with a modern flare, emphasizing efficient mechanics from a body-mind perspective, neo-classical lines, and non-traditional use of the torso and floor. We will start on the floor with breathing and anatomical alignment exercises derived from various somatic practices. The barre consists of longer combinations designed to increase blood flow and to warm the body from the feet up. Barre exercises are directly related to the center combinations and incorporate parallel and allongé lines as well as upper body articulations. Center and traveling exercises build upon the barre material. Grand allegro will be examined from a traditional perspective and then presented as a modified contemporary sequence, giving the students choices for their interpretation.

Developed by Scott Putman and taught by Nicole Buggé, The Elemental Body Alignment System (EBAS) is a series of exercises designed for structural integrity and supported range of motion. Through anchoring and initiating movements via the pelvis, the body discovers its ability to efficiently articulate movement through experiential anatomy. The work deepens the students understanding of where movement comes from, how to align the body and to build a physical consciousness of open pathways of energy for movement. The system helps the learner to override the central nervous system creating new neuromuscular firings supporting a greater understanding of sensorial technique.

This is about seeing dance, and understanding how it might be translated into two dimensional still images. We won’t use camera at all, and won't engage in any "tech speak". Instead, we’ll look together at several short dance pieces — deciding exactly which images might tell the story of that dance, seeing if there is one “iconic” image, etc. The workshop will be useful not just for those who want to photograph dance, but also for dancers and choreographers to better understand how their pieces might best be photographed, or for anybody seriously interested in photography. The main theme will be “Look before you photograph” and we'll focus on how to look inward and outward.

This course is for dancers who want to dance and improvise more musically. Through the anatomy of meters, and various dance rhythms (Western and non-Western), we learn about musical concepts through moving. Topics to explore include: (1) When we suspend a movement in the air, what actually happens musically? (2) Jose Limon talks about succession. How can we approach “succession” through our understanding of the musical concept of "sequence"? (3) In some cultures, dancers count 1-2-3-4. Musicians often find it confusing as they perceive music through macro beats, meter and phrasing. Can we establish a common vocabulary? (4) Laban talks about "space," how can we make better use of space through our understanding of melodic direction? (5) Is dance and music two separate fields after all? Can we find common ground? In this course, we will choreograph a piece together using the tools of non-chord tones, sequence, phrasing, and melodic direction.

We will use our body weight, in relationship to gravity, to provide compression and gentle stretching while maintaining safe alignment of our bodies to support our practice. No previous bodywork experience is necessary. Thai Massage is done on a mat, fully clothed. It is often referred to as assisted yoga and the dance of metta (healing touch). It is relevant and beneficial for many dance practices as it deepens our understanding of alignment, movement and touch. Benefits of Thai Massage include increased range of motion, stress reduction, improved circulation, deep relaxation, and illness prevention.

A form of dance in which it is easy to depict the connection between our past and our present. House is a dance form and music genre that has to this day held great respect for anything Afro Diasporic in nature, from its beat, rhythms and grooves. House dance is the closest to the movement I envision to be more of a correlation to the African culture. The major source in house dance movement steams directly from the music and the elements within the music such as jazz, African, Latin, soul, R&B, funk, hip hop, etc. The other source is the people, the individuals and their characteristics, ethnicities, origin, etc. You make it you.

In house dancing, there is an emphasis on the subtle rhythms and riffs of the music, and the footwork follows them closely. It is often improvised and emphasizes fast and complex foot-oriented steps combined with fluid movements in the torso.

House is a feeling and a culture.

This class investigates the relationship of circular and linear movement ideas. We will explore the coexistence of these seeming opposites: how the one emerges from, interrupts or redirects the other through multiple levels, planes, and pathways. In this process we foster a deep appetite for momentum and continuous physical drive. Contact with the floor provides continuous feedback on our structural organization. Working both upright and upside down we conduct support through an integrated body-system from the ground up, enlivening both trust and confidence in our physical capacities.

Great for all levels as all you need is awareness to see your habits and the desire to grow past them to participate in the class.

Embrace the power of artistic connections in social change movements throughout history. Students will learn dance repertory that incorporates themes of social justice, and later create their own! Repertory by Nikki Manx Dance Project includes "Mandela," the historical legacy of the South African prisoner gone president, "No One Should Go Hungry," an interactive dance set to an audio-documentary created with homeless citizens, and "Same Love," which supports marriage equality. Students will explore how to incorporate various social issues in expressive art forms such as dance, spoken word and multimedia. Students will contribute to the cultivation of their own unique call to action. The company’s thought-provoking signature style of a gestural vocabulary inspires students’ creation of cause-driven movement projects.

This ballet class, taught by Nicole Buggé, will be rooted in the idea of traveling technique. Beginning at the barre, students will investigate how they can take classical steps and exercises and put them into motion. Utilizing the growth structure at barre, dancers will begin by traveling their upper body in pliés, growing to temps lié in tendus, waltzes by rond de james and integrating it all by grand battement. The skills learned at barre will translate into center, where no combination will stand still. Students are encouraged to move further than they imagine they can, stretching the limbs while still maintaining the correct placement and home base in 5th position.

ACROVINYASA takes yoga from Earth to Air! Part Vinyasa Flow, part Acroyoga, part Inversion Training... In this workshop we will Flow, Float and Fly! This practice combines traditional yoga postures with L-based acrobatic flying. The aerial portion revolves around one partner (the base) supporting the other (the flyer) in moving through the air in a series of yoga postures. The necessary component for students learning the practice for the first time is the role of the spotter, who makes sure both base and flyer remain safe and properly aligned. Acrovinyasa brings a playful approach to our traditional yoga practice, feeling more like a dance with gravity than an intense physical practice!
